With the approval of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, China Energy Investment Corporation (China Energy) was formally established on November 28, 2017, following the merger of China Guodian Corporation and Shenhua Group, both Fortune Global 500 companies. Ranked 101st among the Fortune Global 500 in 2018, the company is a backbone state-owned enterprise (SOE) directly under the central government and a pilot enterprise for the reform of companies invested by state-owned capital.

The establishment of China Energy represents the largest restructuring of centrally-administered SOEs since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It is the first centrally-administered SOE to be reorganized after the 19th CPC National Congress. Operating eight business segments including coal, thermal power, new energy, hydropower, transportation, chemical industry, environmental technology and finance, China Energy is world’s largest producer of coal, thermal power, wind power, coal-to-liquid fuels and coal chemicals.

China Energy has 1.8 trillion yuan in assets and a staff of 350,000 employees. As of the end of 2017, its production capacity of coal had reached 480 million tons, and the total installed capacity of power hit 226 GW, including 175 GW from thermal power, accounting for around 15 percent of the national total. It is the world’s only company capable of turning millions of tons of coal directly and indirectly to liquid fuels. The company operates a network of railways with a total length of 2,155 kilometers, 62 ships and ports with a designed handling capacity of 247 million tons.

China Energy works to implement the general requirements for Party building in the new era in all respects, uphold Party leadership, strengthen Party building, and practice strict self-governance in every respect to ensure constant improvement in the quality and efficacy of Party building. It has been taking enhancing the Party’s political building as the overarching principle and making all round efforts to see the Party’s political building enhanced, its theory strengthened, its organizations consolidated, its conduct improved and its discipline enforced, with institution building incorporated into every aspect of Party building. It has also stepped up efforts to combat corruption. In practice, China Energy holds high the banner, takes initiative in assuming responsibilities, and adopts measures to ensure strict observance of institutions, strong Party organization, rigorous performance evaluation and clean government building.

Encouraging Innovation, Seeking Technology-driven Development

China Energy boasts three national key laboratories in the fields of green development of coal, clean and efficient coal-fired power generation and wind power equipment and control. The “clean and efficient use of coal” project led by the company is one of the 17 national key technological innovation projects for 2030. Three of its technological achievements won the first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and another 25 were crowned the second prize. Four of its achievements won the Chinese Patent Golden Award.

China Energy runs the world’s best MW double-reheat ultra-supercritical coal-fired power units at its Taizhou Power Plant. Its digital mine, smart enterprise of Dadu River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd., and the intelligent gas power station project in Beijing spearhead the integration of IT application and industrialization in the energy sector. It has launched www.neep.shop, a B2B online platform for trading power and coal-based chemical products. Its technologies of ultra-low emission from coal combustion achieved by Sanhe Power Plant, large-diameter rock-socketed single piles for offshore wind power farms, coal-based special fuels, oil-free plasma ignition, and the decentralized control system for power plants are among the best at home and abroad.

China Energy has set eyes on the research and development and commercialization of copper-indium-gallium-selenium thin-film solar panels and the technology of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV). Together with 17 organizations, it initiated and launched the National Alliance of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell. A number of academicians have been invited as chief scientists in the alliance in an effort to explore a development path with Chinese characteristics for the hydrogen and fuel cell sectors.

China Energy has accelerated efforts to promote integrated operation and improve quality and performance with aims to preserve and increase the value of state-owned assets and serve as the stabilizer and bedrock of China’s energy supply and security.

China Energy has made continuous efforts to improve development path and innovate in the production process for energy conservation and emission reduction and the implementation of the strategy of four-sphere revolution and one focus on cooperation. The installed capacity of clean energy such as hydropower, wind power and solar power has hit 55.58 MW.

Shaping Concepts of Happiness, Sharing Development Dividends

Following the people-oriented development path, China Energy has been committed to creating a better life and sharing its development dividends with both its employees and society by fulfilling its corporate social responsibility. Progress has been made in renovating rundown urban areas and subsidence areas as some 200,000 residents have moved into new apartments and houses. The company has been active in philanthropy. It has helped 25,919 children with congenital heart disease and leukemia, and funded the construction of 17 schools and 12,855 libraries. The company has earmarked 630 million yuan for targeted poverty alleviation efforts to lift impoverished areas out of impoverishment poverty.

Responding to China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the “going global” strategy, China Energy has made solid progress in globalization.

The Dufferin wind power project in Canada is solidly profitable. The wind power project in Tasmania, Australia, is in stable full operation and has generated expected profits. PT. GHEMM Indonesia was ranked among Indonesia’s most innovative power companies in 2017. The De Aar Wind Power Project in South Africa became profitable soon after it was launched. The whole industrial chain of the project is completed by China Energy, making it an example of energy cooperation along the Belt and Road route and between BRICS members.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on working hard to achieve socialism when inspecting the coal-to-liquid project with an annual production capacity of 4 million tons in Shehua Ningxia Coal Industry Group. Echoing this clarion call, China Energy is dedicated to its mission of supplying clean energy for a more beautiful China.
